Vitest vs Jest vs Node Test Runner 2026: Which JavaScript Test Runner to Choose
A practical 2026 comparison of the three JavaScript and TypeScript unit-test runners worth reaching for — Vitest (the Vite-native runner with instant watch mode, a Jest-compatible API, first-class ESM and TypeScript, and an experimental browser mode), Jest (the battle-tested incumbent from the React era with the largest ecosystem, snapshot testing and a huge body of examples), and the built-in Node Test Runner (node:test — zero dependencies, ships with Node, and runs with node --test). Speed, config, ESM and TypeScript support, mocking, coverage, watch-mode DX, migration paths and which runner to build — or ship in the templates you sell — on in 2026.
